Music

At St. Peter's, music is an integral part of our prayer and worship. We feel strongly that children are able to form a closer relationship to God through music. All children will have the opportunity to sing, to listen to music, to experience different musical instruments and to perform and to enjoy music. Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. As pupils progress, they will develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and listen to a wide range of music from their own cultural heritage and from other cultures.

  • Our principal aim is that children leave St Peter’s Catholic Primary School with a wide range of happy and rich memories in Music formed through interesting and exciting experiences.
  • We provide opportunities that enhance a child’s awareness of their own abilities and strengths as a learner in Music; thus, ensuring that children see learning in music as an ongoing journey not a one-off event.
  • At St Peter’s, children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, appraising, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions and musical genres.
  • We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve and express themselves in music in a variety of different contexts.
  • We ensure that there are a range of wider opportunities for our children to experience musical performances.
  • We want our children to recognise the sounds of a variety of instruments.
  • Children know and independently use the vocabulary of the inter-related dimensions of music: pitch, dynamics, duration, tempo, timbre, texture, structure, musical notations, listen, compose and sing.
  • We support the children in developing a curiosity for the subject and an understanding of all types of music.
  • We encourage children to develop respect for the role that music and musical expression play in an individual’s life.
