Physical Education

At St. Peter’s we want every child to have a healthy and active lifestyle, giving each child the opportunity to experience a variety of skills and understand the importance of a healthy mind and healthy body. We want children’s skills and confidence to progress as they make their journey through the school and throughout later life. We want children to be determined, have great passion, show respect and honesty, gain self-belief and understand the importance and benefits of working in a team. We firmly believe that the recipe for success is high quality first-wave teaching in PE, which is central to the life of our healthy and active school.

Our principal aim is that children leave St. Peter’s Catholic Primary School with a wide range of happy and rich memories in Physical Education, formed through interesting and exciting experiences that enhance a child’s awareness of their own abilities and strengths. We want children to strive to achieve their personal best and continually improve on their own skills. Children will meet the National Curriculum expectations in Physical Education, which will be taught by qualified staff who will support children to develop a range of skills, technique and values. Children will understand how Catholic virtues and British Values relate to Physical Education.

  • We provide opportunities to help children become physically active and to help them understand the importance of physical activity in promoting a healthy active life and mind-set.
  • We help children develop appropriate skills as they participate in a broad range of physical activities.  Determination, passion, respect, honesty, self-belief and team work are key values that the children will develop.
  • We provide children the opportunities to enjoy and engage in competitive sports, games and other co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
  • We give children the opportunity to be part of a team and to develop leadership skills.
  • We support children to develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, both individually and with others.
  • At St. Peter's, children participate in swimming lessons, during which they learn to swim 25m, use a range of strokes effectively and be safe when they are near water.
