Art and Design

At St Peter’s we want every child to be happy and enthusiastic artists. We want the children to be eager to achieve their very best in order to fulfil their God-given talents. We want children’s skills and confidence to progress as they make their journey through the school. We firmly believe that the recipe for success is high quality first-wave teaching in Art & Design, which is central to the life of our creative, caring school.

Intent

Our principal aim is that children leave St. Peter’s Catholic Primary School with a wide range of skills in art and design. These skills will be formed through interesting and exciting experiences that enhance a child’s awareness of their own abilities and strengths as a learner. We want to ensure that children see learning in art and design as an ongoing process not a one-off event. We want children to recognise the progress they have made in art and design throughout their time at St Peter’s.
• Children will meet the National Curriculum expectations in Art & Design.  The curriculum will be taught by highly-qualified staff who will support children to develop mastery of concepts and inspire enthusiasm and interest the subject.
• All children will study Art & Design in two main blocks throughout the year as well as extra-curricular art opportunities. This will ensure that children get plenty of opportunity to develop their skills and their interest in art.
• Opportunities will exist for children of all ages to experience learning beyond the classroom. This could be through trips, visitors, or through linking their artwork to the other subjects they are studying.
• Children will develop a deep understanding of the art and design they are studying. They will increasingly use their prior knowledge to build on what they have learnt. They will begin to develop their own style.
• Children will understand how Catholic virtues and British Values relate to art and design
• In art and design, children will develop the skills and knowledge to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
• Children will develop the skills to be able to think critically in order to develop their own work and critique the work of others. Children will develop a rigorous understanding of art and design.
• Children will develop a real understanding and appreciation of artists from around the world. They will be inspired by the very best talents and shown examples of work from a variety of different artistic movements. These could include Georgia O’Keefe, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Monet and Sonia Delaunay.
• Children will know how art & design both reflect and shape our history and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
