At St Peter’s, we encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time at the school and beyond. The Science curriculum fosters a healthy curiosity in children about our universe and promotes respect for the living and non-living. We believe science encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, skills and positive attitudes. Throughout the programmes of study, the children will acquire and develop the key knowledge that has been identified within each unit and across each year group, as well as the application of scientific skills. We ensure that the Working Scientifically skills are built-on and developed throughout children’s time at the school so that they can apply their knowledge of science when using equipment, conducting experiments, building arguments and explaining concepts confidently ensuring they continue to ask questions and be curious about their surroundings.
Our principal aim is that children leave St. Peter’s Catholic Primary School with a wide range of happy and rich memories in Science formed through interesting and exciting experiences driven through vehicles that enhance a child’s awareness of their own abilities and strengths as a learner; thus ensuring that children see learning in Science as an ongoing process not a one-off event.
• Our aim is that children will meet the National Curriculum expectations in Science, which will be taught by highly-qualified staff, who will support children to develop mastery of concepts and inspire enthusiasm and interest in the subject.
• Opportunities exist for children to experience learning beyond the classroom. This will allow them to enrich their knowledge by, for example, visiting science museums.
• We provide opportunities for children to develop a deep understanding of the subject they are studying. They will increasingly use their prior knowledge to solve problems and develop a sophisticated understanding of Science.
• Children learn and understand how Catholic values and British Values relate to Science.
• In Science, children will develop the skills to appropriately use and select research and sources.
• We aim for children to develop a real understanding and appreciation of the world, learning from the best that has been developed and said.
