Year 6

Welcome to the Year 6 Class Page

2024-2025

29.11.24

On Thursday morning, Year 6 travelled to Stockport Armoury to take part in a Crucial Crew event. It was a brilliant morning, in which we worked our way through six different presentations/sessions about various aspects of growing up and personal safety. We learnt so much through a range of fun and engaging activities.

22.11.24

As part of our new Geography unit, 'investigating our local area', we went on a walk around the land surrounding St Peter's and observed various types of land uses: residential, commercial, agricultural, transport infrastructure, as well as various open spaces. Back in class, we wrote a proposal to the council for one way in which the land use around St Peter's could be improved.

15.11.29

In gymnastics, we have been focusing on various ways of jumping, balancing, rolling and travelling with our weight on our hands, whilst maintaining a high level of quality and control in our actions and movements. We have started to choreograph a routine with a partner, working in unison to link various actions/movements together.

08.11.24

Year 6 have been really enjoying our new Computing topic, in which we have been working in partners to programme a skiing game using Scratch.

It has been great fun and we are all very proud of our games!

18.10.24

For the past week, the children in Year 6 have been working extremely hard on their ‘Big Write' activity to conclude their English unit. For their 'big write' task, they have rewritten the story, 'Star of Fear, Star of Hope' from Lydia's point of view.

The children have put so much hard work and effort into their stories, especially focusing on including fronted adverbials (of time, place and manner), fronted subordinate clauses, relative clauses, parenthesis, passive voice and dialogue into their writing. They have also included a whole host of other structural, grammatical, punctuation and text features.

Their stories have been a joy to read. Well done children!

11.10.24

On Friday, we celebrated the Special Friends Assembly, in which each member of Year 6 was partnered up with a child from the new Reception class and in doing so, becoming 'Special Friends'. It was such a lovely celebration, which the children especially enjoyed!

Well done to all of the Year 6 and Reception children - some very special friendships have been formed!

04.10.24

We have now completed our DT: Chinese Inventions topic and the children have really enjoyed making their own kites. They thought carefully about which materials they wanted to use for the sails (sugar paper, printer paper, plastic bag, tissue paper or wrapping paper) and for their frames (wooden dowels or paper straws). Their final products looked amazing and the children especially enjoyed taking their kites outside for a trial flight!

27.09.24

In PE, we have been focusing on various events from sportshall athletics. In previous weeks, we have focused on the chest push, javelin and speed bounce disciplines. This week, we practiced the standing long jump. The children worked on their techniques and performed the discipline brilliantly, with some great distances jumped!

20.09.24

Exciting times in Year 6 as our 'Special Friends Assembly' is approaching, where each member of Year 6 will be 'buddied up' with a child from the new Reception class.

To prepare for that, we spent an afternoon playing with and getting to know the children in Reception. It was so much fun and we can't wait for the official assembly in a couple of weeks' time.

13.09.24

We are back in business and Year 6 have made an outstanding start to their final year at St Peter's.

Our DT topic to start the year is 'Chinese Inventions'. This week the children carried out an investigation to test the overall efficiency of four different types of paper (printer paper, tissue paper, newspaper and sugar paper). They tested various factors such as strength, absorbency, opacity, as well as carrying out an ink test.

As well as that, the children made their own hanging compasses by magnetising their needles and attaching them with threads to their pencils, before carefully dangling their magnetised needles into plastic cups.

A great start to our new topic. Well done children!
