RE - Class Celebration of the Word - Mother's Day

This week Year 1 shared a beautiful celebration of the word with their families focusing on celebrating Mother's Day. The children worked so hard to prepare special words and treats for their mum's and brought tears to their families eyes with their gratitude and recognition of their mummies special qualities. What a lovely moment in the week to remember how important family is! Well done Year 1.

World Book Day 2026

Year 1 loved celebrating World Book Day this year. The children looked fantastic in their costumes and loved sharing their reasons for choosing the characters with one another. They started the day with a whole school assembly and spent the day immersed in a love of reading.

Topic - History

The children have loved learning about different explorers. They have focused on Christopher Columbus and his journeys to The Americas. They are excited to follow the life and work of Neil Armstrong next to find out about his journey to the moon.

Well being - Zones of Regulation

Across the school, the children have been working on building the skills to identify their emotions and using a toolkit to help them back to a regulated, calm and ready mindset. Year explored how we might feel in the 4 different zones and created toolkit options they can use to help themselves when needed. The children have enjoyed using our daily check ins to explore their feelings and recognise when they have moved between the different zones.

Phonics & Reading

This week Year 1 have continued to develop their phonics knowledge and apply it thorough our reading sessions and across the curriculum. The children are becoming more confident to segment in their head, and attempt books or words that are unfamiliar with greater accuracy and confidence. Keep it up Year 1!

Topic - Music

Year 1 have been loving their music lessons. We have been working on recognising pitch, rhythm and keeping to the beat. The children created marching rhythms in groups using an ostinato tune. The children also took inspiration from the Jungle Book and carried out their own elephant march in the classroom. They rounded of this weeks learning by creating their own marching band of soldiers in the playground, using instruments again.

Football Lesson

This week Y1 were offered the chance to take part in a football training session. The children had a fantastic time with the coaches and worked brilliantly to develop their individual and team skills. We may even have some future footballing stars on our hands! Well done Year 1.

Art - Self Portraits

Year 1 have been developing their skills of creating self portraits. They have use a range of art mediums and this week have focused on pencil sketching. The children have also been developing their pencil shading skills and have attempted to add shading to their portrait. Well done for lots of hard work and laughter along the way! They are excited to begin sculpting next week for their final piece.

Child led celebration of the word - Epiphany

This week the children worked on preparing and leading the class celebration of the word, with greater independence. The children did a wonderful job sharing the gospel and responding with their thoughts and understanding was fantastic. Well done Year 1!

Christmas Week - 2025 Celebrations

The children have had an amazing week of Christmas fun. They have mad some special cards and calendars to share with their families. The children love their Christmas Party day, where they enjoyed lots of treats and festive fun. We wish the children and all their families a very merry Christmas and a happy new year! See you in 2026!

Nativity 2025 - Infant Christmas Performance

This week, the infant children shared their Nativity with the junior children and carried out two amazing performance of Honky Tonky Donkey. The Year 1 children did a fantastic job as the narrator and kept the show going. They performed their song and their lines wonderfully, to rave reviews about the play. Well done to all the children. We are excited for next years already!

Computing - Programming and debugging

This week, Year 1 have been working on their skills of programming (sequencing computer instructions). They had to create an algorithm for their chosen programme. The children then had to predict, sequence, execute and debug any errors they had made along the way. Year 1 were fantastic and so resilient in every lesson. They are very excited to continue this work in school and at home.

English - Planning and independent write

This week, Year 1 have been planning a diary entry based on our focus text, Nibbles the Book Monster. The children worked hard to incorporate their key writing skills as well as to plan adjectives and structuring their sentence to contain who, what was happening and how the characters felt. They are excited to write these up for their final piece of writing in this unit, in a few weeks.

RE - Y1 Celebration of the Word

This week, Year 1 shared their first celebration of the word for this academic year. They helped to prepare the prayers, songs and decide on a focus for the gathering and the best ways to share their understanding. The children did a fantastic job and were so confident in their work. Well done Year 1. We are so proud of you all and can't wait for the next one!

Science - Materials Hunt/Exploration

The children have been enjoying their Science lessons with Mrs Lally each week. This week they were exploring different materials and carried out some investigation work to feel and discuss different materials. The children enjoyed lots of practical activities and worked well in groups to explore their findings.

Maths - Addition

The children have been excellent in developing their addition skill this week using number lines to add more. They worked hard to develop the correct technique and ensuring greater accuracy through their working out.

Geography - Continents

The children have looking at the different areas of the world. This week they learnt a song all about the seven continents and had to locate them on a world map. The children are looking forward to exploring more about the areas they live across our Geography unit.

DT - Making a Stable Structure Part 1

The children have been building their own toy car garage. They have worked on testing products and materials, designing their own and writing instructions for how to create their own toy car garage. This week the children have loved assembling each stage and are excited to decorate and test their final products next week.

English - Sounding Out Skills

The children have been working to improve their sounding out skills in their writing. They have been thinking, saying and writing words and sentences carefully, using phonics knowledge to support their spelling. They have also taken home lots of supporting resources to keep on practicing at home as well.

PE - Control skills and partner work

The children have been working to improve their control skills using their hands and feet. They worked in pairs to bounce and dribble and ball, taking it in turns and shadowing their partner closely.

Science - Identifying Animals

The children have been learning about different animal groups and how to classify them. This week they were focusing on reptiles and birds. They completed a sorting activity after uncovering their specific properties. The children worked together in groups to discuss their new learning and to put each image in the correct animal group.

History - Seaside Holidays

The children have continued to explore seaside holidays from the past. This week they focused on Victorian holidays and what made the seaside such a popular location. The children enjoyed looking at and discussing images of Victorian holidays and worked well to record their findings in their new books. The children also enjoyed looking at and growing in curiosity using the resources from the Cheshire Library service which link to each topic covered across the year.

RE - Year of Hope/Hope for the future

The children considered their own hopes for the school year and created some art work to share during our class celebration of the word. The considered their own journey in life and in school and as a class created a prayer for the year ahead. The children also considered how they are pilgrims of hope in the world and created a creative display to share this and their hopes for the world.

Settling in to a new school year

This week the children enjoyed settling into Year 1 and getting used to new routines. The children have settled well into their new classrooms are enjoying a different style of learning and play.
